Arc Flash Danger and How to Protect Your Workers

The risk of arc flash, which is also called flashover or arc fault, exists in any job with electrical equipment. What Is Arc Flash?

The tremendous electrical discharge of an arc flash can rapidly raise temperature to 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Worker fires and catastrophic burns can result from non-fire-resistant gear melting.

The discharge can melt conductors and cause an arc burst, a supersonic shockwave. With 2,000 pounds per square foot pressure, this explosion can be as loud as a gunshot (140 dB).

Molten metal from the initial arc flash can fly in this blast. An arc flash accident worker may never fully recover from her injuries or death.

Protecting Your Workers

Overheating or short-circuiting at the automatic transfer switch can lead to or cause an arc flash. Causes of arc flashes include:

Use heated safety gear, like gloves, mats, and blankets.

Be Aware Of Circuits’ Energy Levels

For example, when a generator powers an automatic transfer switch (ATS), the ATS and all the equipment that comes after it often have more energy than they would if they were powered by regular mains electricity.

 In order to avoid arc flashes at homes, this can make them more likely and requires more safety measures. While it is dangerous, get the residential electrical repair checked.

Keep a Safe Distance

At lengths of up to six meters, arc flashes may harm people. When operating within the estimated arc flash boundary, operators should keep a safe distance from areas of high risk and wear the right PPE when using remote tools or robots.
