Arc Flash Danger and How to Protect Your Workers

The risk of arc flash, which is also called flashover or arc fault, exists in any job with electrical equipment. For any workers nearby, this unchecked electrical discharge could seriously hurt or kill them. Find out more about the risk of arc flash around generators and how to keep your workers safe within this article.

What Is Arc Flash?

All electrical devices are designed to direct electricity. Electricity occasionally takes an unexpected course. It may leap conductors or ground. Similar events are called arc flashes.

The tremendous electrical discharge of an arc flash can rapidly raise temperature to 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Worker fires and catastrophic burns can result from non-fire-resistant gear melting.

The discharge can melt conductors and cause an arc burst, a supersonic shockwave. With 2,000 pounds per square foot pressure, this explosion can be as loud as a gunshot (140 dB).

Molten metal from the initial arc flash can fly in this blast. An arc flash accident worker may never fully recover from her injuries or death.

Protecting Your Workers

Overheating or short-circuiting at the automatic transfer switch can lead to or cause an arc flash. Causes of arc flashes include:

For example, dropping tools, touching an electrical device by mistake, condensation, airborne dust, corrosion or material failure, or bad installation.

Workers can be kept safe from arc flashes in a number of ways, according to experts. Understanding these is important for anyone who works with energy.

De-energize the circuit

This is the only way to be sure that you won’t get an arc flash, and you should always work on circuits that aren’t charged. All of the listed safety steps should be followed if the circuit has to be “hot.”

In case they identify an unusual flow of electricity, these automatic circuit breakers turn off the electricity to the circuit.

Follow All Safe Work Practices

They should get proper training before working on an energized wire. Additionally, many companies require all workers working on an energized electrical circuit to have an Energized Electrical Work Permit (EEWP).

Written safety programs and on-the-job briefings are optimal. It is important that this training covers reading arc flash warning signs, telling the difference between live and de-energized equipment, figuring out nominal voltage, and measuring clearance distances. Use heated safety gear, like gloves, mats, and blankets.

Be Aware Of Circuits’ Energy Levels

For example, when a generator powers an automatic transfer switch (ATS), the ATS and all the equipment that comes after it often have more energy than they would if they were powered by regular mains electricity.

In order to avoid arc flashes at homes, this can make them more likely and requires more safety measures. While it is dangerous, get the residential electrical repair checked.

Keep a Safe Distance

At lengths of up to six meters, arc flashes may harm people. When operating within the estimated arc flash boundary, operators should keep a safe distance from areas of high risk and wear the right PPE when using remote tools or robots.
